On Saturday, January 27, 2024 an estimated 1600 elected Republican Arizona State Committeemen attended in person and by proxy, the Arizona State Republican Committee meeting in Phoenix, Arizona. One of the main purposes of the meeting was to elect non-statutory elective officers and to conduct other business that may properly come before the meeting.
However, on Wednesday, January 24th, Jeff DeWit, who was the current AzGOP Chairman at the time, suddenly resigned after a leaked audio recording. This recording, from March, 2023 allegedly revealed Dewit offering a position with financial gain to Kari Lake, US Senate candidate. The requirement? Lake would need to sit out of the 2024 election cycle.
With Dewit's unexpected resignation, several candidates QUICKLY threw their hats in the ring to try and replace Dewit.
Who is Gina Swoboda?
The candidate victorious in pursuit of the AzGOP Chairmanship that Saturday was Gina Swoboda. Swoboda boasts a long pedigree of credentials, among them:
- She is a certified elections officer, having served in the AZ Secretary of State's office under two administrations.
- She also served as the State Director of Election Day Operations for President Trump and as coordinator for the observer program with AzGOP and RNC in the 2022 elections.
- Swoboda currently serves as the Chief Elections Policy Officer for Restoration of America and Executive Director of the Voter Reference Foundation, a national non-profit foundation dedicated to ensuring free and fair elections in the United States.
- Swoboda is principal of Agrippa Consulting Group, LLD, and serves as the Senior Policy Advisor to the AZ State Senate Committee on Elections. Swoboda was endorsed by former President Donald Trump and Kari Lake.
