• Officer Jarrett Shughart passed away as the result of an apparent self-inflicted guns
• Officer Shughart served the community of Flagstaff since October 13, 2014
• The family requests privacy during this time of mourning
• The death is being investigation by the Coconino County Sheriff’s Office.

Officer Shughart was with the Flagstaff Police Department 

Flagstaff, Ariz. – It is with heavy hearts that on September 12, 2020, the Flagstaff Police Department discovered Officer Jarrett Shughart at his residence deceased as a result of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. 

Flagstaff Police Department officers arrived at Officer Shughart’s residence conducting a welfare check. Upon their arrival, officers located Officer Shughart deceased. There were no other persons in the home at the time of police arrival. The Coconino County Sheriff’s Office has assumed the investigation of Officer Shughart’s death. 

Officer Shughart served the community with the Flagstaff Police Department since October 13, 2014. During that time, Officer Shughart served as a Field Training Officer and was currently assigned in a light-duty capacity due to a work-related injury. At this time the family requests privacy; funeral arrangements are unknown at this time. The City of Flagstaff and the members of the Flagstaff Police Department extend our deepest condolences to Officer Shughart’s family and friends. 

Members of the Crisis Intervention Stress Management Team are working with department personnel during this time of grief and loss. The Flagstaff Police Department would like to remind others in need of assistance to reach out to services available in the community. Any investigatory follow-up may be directed to the Coconino County Sheriff’s Office in conjunction with their investigation of the incident. We will provide additional information as it becomes available.
