Forecast Discussion:

Wow…what an amazing 3-day weekend it was, with two back-to-back weather systems following last Tuesday’s frontal system. The quad city area had between 1.5” and 4.8” of liquid water equivalent in the past week, with the average weekly rainfall total being about 2.5”. The lowest elevations had perhaps a dusting of snow, but the highest elevations on the south side of town currently have about 18” of snow on the ground at the 7,000’ level.

Snow showers will linger in the area today through tomorrow morning as the air remains very moist and the cold core of the trough will move overhead, keeping the air weakly unstable. There is another weak disturbance behind the main trough that will move across the area overnight, keeping the threat of light snow showers going. Perhaps up to an inch or two of additional snow accumulation is possible today to tomorrow morning.

The next weather system is expected on Thursday – Friday and another one on Sunday – Monday. These next weather systems will dive down into Arizona from the northwest and will likely tap into less moisture, but will be colder than this past weekend. I expect perhaps 1”-3” of snow with each of these next two systems in the Prescott area. There is considerable uncertainty in this forecast, however, as forecast models have not yet converged on a consistent solution. The roads will likely be icy on Friday morning and again next Monday morning.

Have a great week!
