Prescott NF to Allow Swimming in Forest Lakes

Big Idea

  • The order to prohibit swimming was recently rescinded
  • Swimming will be allowed in Lynx Lake, Granite Basin Lake, Horesthief Basin Lake and Mingus Lake
  • Swimming is considered a compatible and suitable use of these lakes
  • The lakes will still have fishing and boating - play nice, be safe!

Forest leadership has decided to allow swimming in all four lakes

PRESCOTT, AZ, August 28, 2020 – The Prescott National Forest manages 4 lakes across the forest; LynxGranite Basin, and Horsethief Basin Lakes on the Bradshaw Ranger District and Mingus Lake on the Verde Ranger District.

Though the Prescott National Forest closed all lakes to swimming several years ago, the closure order prohibiting swimming was rescinded following recent changes and guidelines to closure order protocols.  Upon review of current conditions, no direct health and safety concerns currently exist, so Forest leadership has decided to allow swimming in all four lakes.

While swimming is considered a compatible and suitable use of these lakes, the lakes will still be managed for multiple uses, including boating and fishing.  Practice good etiquette; give boaters and those fishing adequate space.  For your safety, make them aware of your presence and ask where they are heading or casting.  Be aware and alert of hazards, and avoid swimming where active fishing and boating is occurring.

The Prescott National Forest is coordinating with Arizona Department of Game and Fish, Arizona Department of Environmental Quality, City of Prescott, Yavapai County Sheriff’s Office and other agencies as swimming restrictions are lifted.  All users are invited to share ideas for reducing hazards, defining etiquette for water based activities, and maximizing compatibility.

Remember, Stage 1 Fire Restrictions are currently in effect.

Visitors can obtain additional information, post questions and share ideas for improving multiple use of these lakes by visiting the Prescott National Forest Website: http://www.fs.usda.gov/prescott/ or by following us on Facebook or Twitter; or call one of our district office: Verde Ranger District (928) 567-4121, Bradshaw Ranger District (928) 443-8000, Supervisors Office (928) 777-2200
