Arizona vaccine levels continue to rise.
PHOENIX — More than 3 million Arizonans are now fully vaccinated against COVID-19, another milestone as the state increases its protection against the coronavirus, Governor Doug Ducey and the Arizona Department of Health Services (ADHS) announced today.
“Millions now have the full benefit of these safe, highly effective, free, and widely available vaccines,” Governor Doug Ducey said. “I encourage every Arizonan who hasn’t been vaccinated yet to roll up their sleeve, get the COVID-19 vaccine, and help end the spread of the virus.”
An ADHS review of Arizona COVID-19 cases shows just how effective the vaccines are: Of 16,910 total COVID-19 cases in May, 95.4% ‒ 16,139 in all ‒ involved people who weren’t fully vaccinated. Ninety-one percent of the cases involved people who weren’t vaccinated.
As of this morning, 3,006,771 Arizonans have received either both doses of the Pfizer or Moderna vaccines or one dose of the Johnson & Johnson/Janssen vaccine. A total of 6,201,598 doses have been administered to 3,461,366 individuals since COVID-19 vaccine doses began arriving in Arizona in December.
“Study after study shows that COVID-19 vaccines prevent serious illness and death from COVID-19,” Dr. Cara Christ said. “While cases and deaths are much lower today, this virus continues to infect and kill. There’s no reason for that when we have vaccines that are proven to be effective and safe and that are available at hundreds of locations, often on a walk-in basis.”
More than 1.6 million doses have been administered at state mass-vaccination sites in the greater Phoenix area, Tucson, Yuma, and Flagstaff. These sites are closing this month but continue to accommodate walk-ins until then.
