Forecast:
Mostly sunny and becoming hot during the week. Afternoon highs ranging from high 80s to mid-90s today, warming to mid-90s to low-100s by Wednesday and persisting through the weekend. Isolated high-based thunderstorms are possible over high terrain from about Thursday onward, with the best chances to our east across the White Mountains region. These will have the potential to spark wildfires. In our area, we will most likely just see some afternoon cloud buildups. Winds will be breezy and from the southwest each day.
Additional notes for the weather nuts:
As we transition into summer, we will start to see limited monsoon moisture seeping into the state from the south. The monsoon is largely controlled by the location of mid-level high pressure system that sits over our region during summer. Air blows clockwise around the high. During May and most of June, the high is still to our north, keeping dry westerly flow over us. As we progress into July, the high moves north, often taking up a location to our northeast, allowing moisture to move up into AZ from the south or southeast. The high center is also associated with very warm temperatures, so our hottest weather occurs as the high traverses the state on its northward journey. That is why the period right before the monsoon moisture arrives can be very hot. We are entering this period now.
Have a great week!
