PHOENIX — Governor Doug Ducey proclaimed this week, June 13 - 19, Monsoon Awareness Week in Arizona to highlight the importance of staying safe during monsoon season and to spread awareness of the challenges of extreme weather conditions.

“Arizona’s monsoon season can be dangerous, and we encourage Arizonans to take all necessary precautions to stay safe,” said Governor Ducey. “From June until September, our communities are at higher risk of heavy rains, flash flooding, extreme heat and high winds. It’s important to check weather forecasts, drive safely, and pull over when dust storms hit to protect yourself, your loved ones and fellow Arizonans.”

Arizona’s monsoon season begins in mid-June and lasts through the end of September. During this time, Arizona experiences higher humidity, which can lead to heavy rain, thunderstorms, lightning, hail, high winds, flash floods (especially in areas of recent wildfires), dust storms and extreme heat.

These storms, along with floodwaters that overwhelm our land, cause property damage, jeopardize our food supply and threaten the health and safety of the people in our state as well as visitors.
